How to Diversify Your Job Search Strategy (Pt. 2) Building Your Future Now One of the best ways to get out of your job search funk is to change your approach. Most of us look for a job in a host of traditional ways, yet these methods dont typically amount to much. Why? Because most everyone is applying to the same jobs on masse and acquiring the same info online and in books. Ok, where do I start? It is a frustrating reality! However, you can change it by disconnecting yourself from the tradition ways of looking for a job. That means sitting down and brain-storming different and creative ways of hunting down for a job. Buy a blank book and write! Go out and buy yourself a new journal. Turn to the first page. Now without giving it too much thought write down anything that comes to mind about finding a job that you would like. This means jotting down people, names, places, companies, positions, salary expectations, what friends are doing, people you admire and why, inspiring words, projects your proud of, your failures, skills, accomplishments etc Hopefully you get the idea. After you have a pretty decent list go back and high-light key words by underlining them. Now re-read what you have written. Meditate on these words. Now, off to the next step. Left field is best Hopefully that felt good! Its sometimes a good idea to do some writingyou dont know where it will lead you, but gives you an interesting picture of some things brewing unconsciously. If you want to acquire the job you want do some research on several companies you want to work for. Also, study some people you admire and read up on how they got to where they are in their careers. If you have a more entrepreneurial minddevelop a solid business plan for an idea you havelike what you did above, free-write anything related to your idea in your book. Its all about people Whatever you do in your career you will always need people around you to help you out. It is only in a few isolated and rare instances that a unique individual accomplishes some amazing things without any real help. However, realistically you must consider those who can help you get the job you want or achieve your business goals. Get out of your comfort zone If you want to get a better job or are serious about your career you need to get out of your comfort zone. If you are searching for a job and you arent a great people person you may perhaps want to re-think that. You need to ditch your online application methods and simply go out to events and mingle with people! Dont like it? Great! Getting too comfortable with the way you have been searching for a job is killing you. You Say You Do But You Dont - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career When it comes to hiring you, CMO Laura Ching from TinyPrints.com says it all in Sunday’s New York Times: “One of the hardest things to screen for is adaptability â€" just being able to go with the flow…things move so fast. You can come in and this is what the job description says today, but after a month’s time, it’s going to look different.” You say you want to be entrepreneurial, you don’t want to be micro-managed, and that you want to be creative. But you complain that you are forced to stop a project and start another before the first one is finished. Apparently you don’t see or care that the finish line got moved, and that’s why your company is changing course. Changing maps Why would you believe the map never changes? Look at what’s happening in Egypt and the Middle East â€" and in Madison, Wisconsin. People are risking their lives for change â€" all we’re asking you to do is open a new job ticket. Breaking news: When you sign on to company, it is no longer for a fixed job at a fixed salary in a fixed location for a fixed amount of time. You do not have the righteous obligation to bring up the problems and inconsistencies, and complain about a lack of clarity as roles and relationships change by necessity â€" or by your CEO’s reading of the company’s crystal ball. Here’s the thing. Rigidity is a career ending injury. You can never play in the NBA. You can never negotiate a treaty. You won’t survive a fall on the catwalk during fashion week, or do any of the exciting, highly paid jobs that required a change mindset. Great careers demand great improvisational skills â€" the first rule being to say, “Yes, and….” Successful people don’t continue to tango when the music changes to hip-hop. Sometimes theyll call an audible I hear such frustration from my coaching clients. They feel they were guaranteed the job they won would be exactly the job they do. What they don’t realize is their boss wishes it were true. So do the investors, ad agency, product development people, logistics people and webmaster. Change is painful, expensive and necessary. Do you say you do, but you really don’t want want to experience the realities of being successful in business? The excitement that comes with anxiety as your company attempts to innovate, iterate, invent, re-invent and take risks â€" including taking the company off one track and moving to another â€" and maybe moving back, or moving out of the sector. Look at the success of Ignighter.com. In 2008, twenty-somethings Kevin Owocki, Daniel Osit and Adam Sachs launched it as a “group dating” site based in the US. It’s designed to help people avoid the one-on-one misery of a first date.   The site lets members create group outings so they’re mingling with a bunch of people at some fun activity. It took off all right but never grew much in the US, where the guys were hustling to make it happen. After a year, they looked at the stats, and even though they had NEVER been to these countries, their site was doing better in Asia, particularly well in India. Guess what they did? They clung to their business plan and kept chipping away at the domestic market. No, just kidding. They moved the focus of the business to India, where there are now two million users. They are about to visit India for the first time, to open an office there, hire local people â€" and enjoy the venture capital they got from among others, Rajan Anandan, Google’s top executive in India. The next time your boss calls an audible, run with it. Look in the direction you’re told to move toward, and find your way there, until you’re told to change direction again. How To Write A Killer About Page In Under An Hour - When I Grow Up If they say it can’t be done, don’t believe them. You can absolutely write a killer ‘About’ page in under an hour. Revel in crafting this page on your business website, because it’s one of the easiest, breeziest parts. The truth is, your ‘About’ page only needs a few things to really sparkle, and more importantly, to really do its job! â€" a.k.a. tell people all about the amazing pieces of you and your experience that make you exactly the right person to hire. Take it from me (a business coach who has actually helped hundreds of women stomp into their own successful dream businesses and set up their own ‘About’ pages), this is what your bio needs to include… Your past relevant experience Your personal story that lead you to this job Any related credentials if ya got ‘em. (No problem if you don’t!) Let’s walk through it: First, some marketing people will tell you that you need to reverse-psychology your way around your ‘About’ page by making it all about your potential client, and not yourself. This is my biggest pet peeve. Don’t do this. I don’t want to hear about you if you’re just making yourself out to be a version of someone you think I want to work with or if you’re just telling me all about me. I want to hear about you â€" special, unique, talented you! â€" and why you love your job and how you’re going to help me. This is especially important if you are a solopreneur steering your whole business ship by yourself. Clients need to know they’re connecting with a real human who has real human feelings, experience, and perspective. (Likewise, if your business is solely run and operated by you, don’t say “we here at xyz,” or “contact us if blah-blah-blah.” It’s OK if it’s a one woman show! Own it and “me” it up, lady!) As for your experience and credentials, pick the most relevant or robust details to include. If you have worked with major clients in the past (even if they aren’t the types of folks you’ll be working with today) go ahead and namedrop them. Likewise, if you’ve gone through tons of intensive schooling and worked your butt off for a certificate/degree, definitely write it down! However â€" and this is very important â€" do not panic if you don’t have any professional experience or training and this is your first soirée in this industry. This is where your personal story comes in! By talking the reader through what brought you to your business, you’re inadvertently explaining why it’s right for you right now, which also makes you right for them to hire right now. When I first started business coaching, do you think I was born with the training? Absolutely-freakin’-not. But, I did come from a musical theater background which means I knew all about working/collaborating/communicating with creatives. My experience in the arts schooled me in thinking outside the box, how to be innovative and resourceful, and how to “sell” myself. It also showed me a lot about my own strength and spine, considering so much of the show-biz lifestyle is hearing the word “No,” like, a lot. Today, I have 10+ years experience on the Michelle that started coaching women in 2008. But, she did an amazeballs job just the same, and you better believe I included all of her experience in my ‘About’ page bio at the time! Today, my ‘About’ page is pretty different, but that’s because I was able to grow thanks to what I brought to the table all those years ago! OK, so once you’re done bragging (â€" that’s a good thing! You want to brag here!), feel free to tack on a few sentences or a small paragraph that does speak to your client, and make sure you include a Call To Action that tells them how they can work with you! (To be very honest, it’s rare that people spend a ton of time on your ‘About’ page, and that’s totally fine. But, if they do, you want to make it incredibly easy for them to sign up to work with/purchase from you!) Here are a few of my favorite ‘About’ page examples from three of my amazeballs previous clients: Courtney Fanning of Big Picture Branding (90 Day Business Launch alum): Courtney did a great job streamlining all of the amazing details about herself that make her a Brand Strategist and Copywriting expert. She incorporated a lovely bio, quick facts, summary of her big previous clients, and an outline of her skill set (or a ‘tool box’ as she likes to call it!) to make a clean, digestible, and still detailed ‘About’ page. Nailed it! Carole Anne Penney of Penney Leadership, LLC (90 Day Business Launch alum): I love how Carole incorporated different fonts and sizes to highlight the important details she really wanted to stand out. By starting with her credentials and then guiding the reader into her expanded story â€" and ending with the option to sign up for her newsletter! â€" she walks potential clients through the exact reasons she’s the right person to hire for strategic leadership coaching. Ashley Farrar of Meldrum Design  (Boost Your Dream Business alum): Ashley uses headers and short paragraphs to categorize all the juicy details about herself and her experience. She also utilizes “fun facts” to pepper her ‘About’ page with more relevant business information and took care to explain her mission and approach. Of course, she also ends with a great CTA! ***Very last asterisk*** INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME AND PHOTO. Please. I don’t care if it isn’t a professional photo, I just care that there is a face behind all the beautiful words you just wrote. An old acting rule applies: A photo of you on a “good” day is all we need! Also, Portrait mode on new iPhones is amazing. Sounds pretty easy, right? Now, set a timer for 45 minutes. When that bell rings, if you aren’t wrapping up, it’s time to step away. Take a breath. And review this outline: Your name. Your photo. Your experience and/or story: What led you to this work Why it’s important to you Your professional credentials (if applicable) A smidgen about your client. Your Call To Action.
